Katakana (and hiragana) do in fact represent a syllable each, as you say, but those syllables are probably not what you were expecting. In this case: hazubando.
 
Kanji are Chinese characters, borrowed way way way back in Ye Olde Dayes of Yore. Ideogrammatic, each one represents a simple concept, but can be read/pronounced in multiple ways depending on usage.
