That’s what I think too. People seem to disregard the “high-ranking officer”, if Flash was a high-ranking officer, he must have some history with Equestria’s royal guard, especially dealing with the captain.

Indeed. While I admit the Royal Guard isn’t quite like modern-day militaries, which require a college degree for officers, they aren’t entirely like police, which do not (though the highest ranked in larger cities almost always do). So, at least for me, it seems likely Flash (along with Shining Armor) graduated college at one point.
 
Hmm, perhaps that’s how they met? Shining Armor wouldn’t just pick random specialists to help him reestablish the Crystal Empire. Chances are, he’d already be familiar with the guy…

We already know that he holds a pretty high rank. Perhaps XO or another high ranking officer. Probably some of the initial support staff that went to the Crystal Empire to help bring the Crystal Ponies up to strength militarily. Plus, he’d have to be a college graduate in order to hold officer rank, so it’s not like he’s an idiot.

If Human Sentry was not a background character due to his minimized and estranged role in both EQG’s (for what some people think). Would people consider Pony Sentry to be a background pony, considering his actions in Season 4 (escort for Princess Cadence and announcer for arrival of VIP’s/High ranking Princesses, etc)? From cadet experience, I think that being given the position to be allowed to announce the arrival of the “official party” is a very big responsibility and a big honour and rank in order to uphold that position.

Unless things are different in the pony world, this seems like the inverse of their dynamic from the human world - Flash was a little more forward and assertive, Twilight was a little more shy and reserved.
 
I guess the power relationship’s pretty different here since now he’s a guard on duty and his boss is showing him off a little, and it’s not like Twilight was a bumbling Fluttershy-esque moe-puddle around him or anything, but their one interaction in the pony world in the film had Flash replying smoothly while Twilight’s lost for words.
 
Not that it couldn’t become this, just that we haven’t seen any of this yet.
