Because the most logical thing to do when encountering any being from another dimension is to centrifuge them.

As someone who is actually going into the field of genetic engineering, I have to say certain scientists pretty much torture animals all the time to get result. They justify it since in the end research does help mankind.

In the past live human beings / animals were sliced up while still conscious to study the human body. Seems horrific but the knowledge gained from that helped doctors worldwide. An interesting debate subject.

Actually, every time magic is used, it gives them ears/tails and their horns/wings of their respective counterparts. It may not need them to change into a ponies to simply exist, but to be used, that seems to be a requirement.

It’s probably the mirror itself that does the cahnging. Seeing that human bodies can handle equestrian magic just dandy. Forcing a way through might take away that transformation.
