Nightmare Moon, Luna, was a Heartless.  
Nightmare Rarity was a Nobody who needed Rarity as a vessel.

Oh, now I get it. The Nightmares use the same techniques Xehanort used to travel through time and create copies of himself. XD

Yeah, you better set the sun and moon properly before Celestia and/or Luna notice (if they haven’t already).

The only thing that I can’t make sense of is the why and how’s of Rarity’s current situation. It makes no sense. Unless Rarity has the same obscure potential that both versions of Sombra had, Rarity should not have all of Nightmare Rarity’s powers if Nightmare Moon is already reincarnated. Not to mention the corruptive nature of the powers.
 
For the sake of enjoying this story, I’m considering Rarity to be the exact same kind of being as Evil Sombra thanks to Nightmare Moon’s last act before reincarnation, but still managing to hold onto her(Rarity) sanity.

There was only one Nightmare that essentially, after Luna admitted to her initial lie that the nightmare forces predated her, functioned basically the same as King Piccolo from Dragon Ball. She is basically 1000 years of Luna’s corrupted godly powers now separate and manifest. The only difference being that Nightmare Moon needed a vessel. They even confirmed in a more recent comic that other deities have been corrupted by their anger and power very much like Luna, but not by any single entity named Nightmare.
 
While Twilight’s power is large, sporadic, trained but uncontrollable, Rarity’s potential as a unicorn is vast and almost completely untapped. That and the personality similarities and self-doubt made her the perfect vessel.
 
In the past comic done by this person, where Nightmare Moon had a body for herself just like that and reformed being nicknamed Moony. The concept was a little ridiculous. Nightmare Moon, alone, is merely an entity of evil. It makes Luna look like she divided into two Luna’s like an amoeba.
 
This storyline, however, takes a different spin. After possessing someone else, Nightmare Moon essentially became a unique individual by attaching to Rarity. She wants to be alive, regardless of Luna or her memories of being Nightmare Moon.
 
She is a reincarnation of someone else’s(Kami/Luna) evil entity(King Piccolo/Nightmare Moon)
 
Long story short, Sparity is basically Piccolo in this story.

But wasn’t there only one Nightmare? That force that infected Luna infected Rarity (in the comics) and then this whole scenario with Rarity’s resurrection…..And if she was the Mare in the Moon then she should be imprisoned in the moon since that’s why the mark appeared………this comic’s canon is confusing.

No, it’s not explained. She appears one comic and goes “I have my own body now!” and gets roped into doing some paperwork.

I don’t remember if the return of the original nightmare to the moon was ever explained on a comic. You can see her in another comic doing princess stuff with Luna.  
It’s in the time line but I can’t find why.
