Also, the movie is aimed at pre-teen girls so of course it’s going to have some “pop-culture” references in it, “selfies” being a very minor one…

Selfies have been around since pretty much the invention of the personal camera.

The trailer shows a clip of Spike photobombing a selfie, and people start complaining about maymays ruining the movie?

Yeah,but now “Selfie” have been put under the spotlight again since the whole “But first let me take a selfie” maymay. So yeah,they rake maymay and fads as a crutch for writing and to hide the fact that it’s a shitty Monster High rip-off

I don’t know, “Selfies” have been around technically sense cameras were invented. Only self-photographs weren’t called that until recent years now that nearly all phones have cameras in them.
 
Don’t see what the big deal is, this moment still seems funny, so at least the movie will have some funny bits. (I chuckled when I saw the CMC have their “Show Stopper” outfits back again.)
