His profile page says he’s from France. Maybe disinformation, I don’t know.
Sometimes you don’t know any native speakers, but you want your work to be seen by more people all over the world. Or would you prefer this comic to be in French only? We already have enough untranslated text here.
At the very least it’s not apparent anywhere here that English isn’t the artist’s native language. So I doubt any harm was meant by the initial BP’s comment, not knowing that.

Generally, you either shouldn’t write in a language where you need slack to start with, or run it past a few native speakers for proofreading before you publish it.
English isn’t the only language in the world. Cut a French guy some slack.
