Just as an aside, I’m almost positive that’s why they went with their pony colorations in Equestria Girls- to keep people from bitching about the characters being the “wrong” race. Big Mac was an exception, I suppose.

It’s mostly because the meme originates from 4chan, where everyone is anonymous. Since it is primarily meant to be anon interacting with the pony “waifu” or “husbando”, anon tends to play a part in them.
It’s usually Anon, but it can be anyone.
Which is kind of the point of it being Anon.
