See, I don’t think it’s that. The current staff have described them as adults several times. Spike isn’t more than six or seven years younger than any of the Mane Six, though.

It’s canon that all six of the girls are in the 12 to 18 range. My estimates are that Twilight and Pinkie are 15, Rainbow, Applejack and Fluttershy are 16 and Rarity is 17.
