Huh, didn’t even consider the target demographic thing before you mentioned it but now that you did I can totally see that as a reason. The games were hyped so much by us the adult audience, but little girls sure as hell wouldn’t care about that, so it just sense.

And yeah, I liked the moral as well, since its a an extremely relatable situation to be in, and imo they handled it pretty well. And the nice fireblast at the end didn’t hurt either.

I agree. I really liked this episode. Part of it was because I didn’t expect to see much of the Equestria Games. Yes, the title of the episode is very misleading, but we as a fandom are once again forgetting about one thing: the target demographic. I know for a fact that little girls don’t give two cents about major sports events like the Olympics. And what kind of plot is an event like that anyway? It isn’t one. These episodes need conflict. I understand that grown men are disappointed they didn’t get to see the sports they wanted to see, but they are therefore unable to take this episode for what it is, which is a very entertaining Spike episode with a unique lesson that almost everyone regardless of their sex or age can relate to.

You are right about the Equestria Games hype. That really did ruin it.

I don’t hate Spike either, but he’s had better episodes. I even enjoyed Power Ponies more than this episode. It shouldn’t have been a Spike episode.

No.

The episode wasn’t bad, its just that since the Equestria Games were hyped so much through the season, not getting its actual games for its episode threw most people down.

But that’s a completely different thing than this episode being “bad”. That’s just not fair.
This episode wasn’t what people were expectin an episode called “Equestria Games” would be, but it as a Spike episode were pretty good.

If one can take off either their Games-hype glasses or their Spike-hate glasses (whichever is more prominent for each person), then this episode becomes really enjoyablem, but its a pretty damn solid one by itself.

Its obvious that if you’re waiting for the games, then not seeing them is going to be dissapointing, but if someone can’t tell the difference between that and the episode’s own quality for what it really is, then that’s another problem altogether.

I like this episode too. But I understand this is an episode that you either love or hate.

SayS was also written by Polsky and I absolutely hate that episode, one of the reasons was Spike being suddenly completely incompetent for the sake of laughs (while I was crying from the inside). However Spike finally got the admiration he deserves. Though he did make a fool out of himself during the whole anthem thing. I found that much more understandable.

Talking about a scene that you either love or hate, I believe that was the anthem one. The purpose was to make everyone cringe just like with cmc’s performance back in S1. As well with that episode I laughed the whole way through and that crying baby at the end was the finish in touch. I could nonetheless understand, it also makes some people do the opposite: actual cringing. Anyhow we’re all unique folks with our own tastes and opinions yadayada…

Another thing that people seem to be disappointed about was how this episode being hyped for such a long time hardly paid attention to the actual games. I too found it a bit of a shame. Again I did like the concept of the episode, but it might have worked better as a two-parter. One focusing from Spike’s perspective and another on the games and the competitors. If only this season was 27 episodes, oh well…

I loved how he pulled the umbrella out of nowhere. I swear he has pockets and they have pocket into a pocket dimension. Like a bag of holding.

You can’t blame me for thinking otherwise, without how people have been throwing similar remarks around. “Fandom this, fandom that…”
If you don’t like this episode, that’s fine. I respect your opinion. Plenty of people did like it.

The episode was bad. They hype the Equestria Games and this is what we got? Come on.

I’m not trying to “start shit”. I just hated this episode. About the only thing I enjoyed was RD’s “sup”. Gave me a smirk, but that didn’t save it for me.
