Well to be fair, he IS too young for Rarity.
And the “going after the little sister” thing only applies if he’s the one to seek Sweetie (and not the other way around) especially right away. If for example, Sweetie was the one with a crush on Spike, while he’s initially uninterested but slowly warms up to her, then the trope doesn’t apply at all.

Hey, if you can bring up the “too young for Rarity” thing in your scenario, I think people reserve the right to bring up the “go after the little sister of his crush” thing and not have it called bitching.

It was only after Rarity sat Spike down and explained to him that while she thought he was the most perfect prospect a mare could wish for, he was simply too young for her, that Spike was finally able to let go of his feelings and begin the slow, and often painful process of moving along with his life. By doing so however, he was also finally able to notice the small pair of eyes that had always been watching him with admiration, wonder and and affection. Spike then wondered if maybe this was the universe’s way of saying: “Yeah kid, I think we’ve been screwing with you enough.”

In b4 bitching about “going for the sister”.
