Twilight Sparkle has been capable of cross-species transformations since the first season, and ponies have never been even implied to have magic resistance. Apparently, making someone old or young is harder than turning them into a mouse.
 
Seriously, magic in this show has always been as hard or as easy as the scene required. One of the reasons that nailing down power levels is so difficult.
