Faculty may not take overt action when dealing with bullies, but they’re not dumb, they’ll know who the bad seeds are and if you aren’t on that list then they can probably deduce that you aren’t the enabler.
 
An a*s whoopin’ isn’t the preferred method for dealing with bullies, but under circumstances that aren’t that uncommon, they can show bullies what the world is like when they’re not “on top.” Sometimes the perspective from “the bottom” starts the road to recovery.
 
Just so we’re clear, the “killer instinct” @Jackarunda is buying into is not the answer and is not what I’m getting at.

In my school, faculty punished all participants in a conflict, since kids are damned liars. If a kid stands up to a bully, it’d be easy for the bully to get his friends to vouch for him, making it look like the victim is the one who started it. The only solution is to punish both parties involved. Because of this, kids are told that if they’re bullied, they should go straight to an adult.
 
Yeah, it’s messed up that all sides are punished for fighting, but kids and teenagers have repeatedly proven throughout history that they can’t really be trusted.

Responding to bullies with hostility is never the answer, period. If you do, then you’ll only invite yourself to even worse consequences, either from the bullies themselves, or because faculty won’t be able to figure out who started the conflict since it’s usually just two kids putting their word against each other (and kids will usually lie to get themselves out of trouble.)

@BarryFromMars It’s not really hypocritical, yanno the concept of M.A.D? Basically similar to that, you’re showing off just how far you’re willing to escalate, and egging them to call their bluff or get on your level. Had a couple of my marks do that, tho for me it was all about profit, so I declined to escalate because I could always find an easier one to lean on. If I actually cared about pushing around others as his bullies do (what with them continually invading his facebook support page and EqD) then I would have escalated in turn. For the most part it does work though because the average bully is a weenie from a well-to-do but neglectful family, so either fear of their parents or lack of backbone will prevent escalation. It’s especially necessary to consider escalation since so much of the faculty either ignore or outright encourage the continuation of bullying. Gotta catch’em at an off-grounds place and lay the smackdown on’em. When a smackdown doesn’t work on a bully, this is usually because they’ve figured this is the height of your determination, and win or lose they can escalate farther, but you won’t. Gotta break their expectations straight up.
 
I’d say in Michael’s case escalation wouldn’t have worked, because they already read him as being too nice. He’d fight back, get beaten, and then they’d know without a shadow of a doubt that was the extent of his pushback. There would never come a moment where his bullies would have been all “Whooooa, hold the fuck up psycho, we was just plaaaayin’, chiiiiiilll, we cool, we cool!” He really needed an outside force to come to bat.

Do you even listen to what you’re saying? “I don’t condone violence but if you’re going to do it, Do this.” You may prove me wrong if I’m wrong about this but that really is what it’s coming across as to me!
 
I’ve never been bullied outside of verbally yet (Having never attended a public school as I was home schooled) but I sure felt like doing it in the past even when I watched a video on YT about bullying the other day, Yet I know that if I were to do any of it I’d be asking for more and I’d rather be baking bread than building bombs which can blow me up. After all, Can a friend be a friend when punching is involved?

Mh…didn’t mean to insult the kid. Guess I’m still too harsh and cold to people (I’m not a best example of human being but whatever). After all I wasn’t able to stop people bullying me for look and talk like a girl, even if I fought back.
