No thank you. I’m mentally dating Pinkamena.
Really.
No thank you. I’m mentally dating Pinkamena.
Really.
Marry me.
When people mention fedora, if it is obviously not used in its literal sense, you can usually translate “fedora” as “I believe that there are evidences that you conform to most, if not all, of the following traits, <insert a list of traits here>”
That list of traits are usually intended to sound negative. That list of traits usually contains the following:
Male: This is not regarded as a negative trait on its own, but it is the underlying assumption for most of the following insults.
Over 25 years old: Preferably over 35 years old. As above, this is not regarded as a negative trait on its own, but it is the underlying assumption for most of the following insults.
Single: Society seem to condemn single people as either picky, lazy, unloveable, or psychologically abnormal (back when homosexuality was considered a perversion, attractive people who avoided marriage were sometimes gossiped and accused as being homosexual). The reason society disapproves of singleness is probably because society approves of population growth (even in our era, with the shadow of overpopulation looming, people still tend to view a steady population growth a good thing).
Have a neckbeard: Regarded as a sign of a disregard of personal aesthetics and laziness.
Obese: Regarded as a sign of a disregard of personal aesthetics and laziness.
Sweaty: Regarded as a harmless, yet “ridiculous” trait, just like the many other bodily functions that are usually considered “ridiculous”.
Wears glasses :Society in general seem to regard glasses as a sign of physical defect, something that is “not cool”.
Lives in the basement: Rgarded as a sign of poverty, laziness, and lack of independence and serious aspiration (for an explanation of “seriousness”, see below).
Lives with parents: Regarded as a sign of poverty, laziness, and lack of independence and serious aspiration.
Does not have a “serious occupation”: Society, on average, expects males to work in “serious occupations” like industrial production, public services, politics, business, finance, etc. Some examples of occupations widely regarded as “insufficiently serious” include comic artist, radio station host, freelance writer, independent scholar, etc.
In short, it seems that all these traits all converge on one single connotation: “According to the social norms, you are a failure. And yet you don’t even know that you are a failure”.
The reason “fedora” happened to be used to denote such an extensive list of negative traits is just a linguistic accident, the origin of which can be found in urbandictionary:
“In the first half of the 20th century, this was a hat synonymous with manly style. It was about looking cool without appearing juvenile.
In present times, the fedora is a trademark of the socially inept beta male. He is attempting to distance himself from pop culture with the distinct style of past fashion. But he captures none of the suave, and only comes off looking like an oblivious, pompous fool. This is especially the case when it’s a low-quality fedora coupled with unfashionable clothes and an unkempt appearance.”
The negative sense of the word “fedora” may be a recent invention, yet the insulting function it serves is in no way new. Throughout history, people have used other insults with the same “you are an obligate failure” connotation. Say, “bastard”, “nerd”, “sissy”, etc.
I hope I have made my theory clear enough. Do not hesitate to point out anything you consider unclear or untenable.
…Okay, now you’re just being rude. And I don’t even know why fedoras are used as insults these days…
Your fedora is in the mail.
I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it when people bring that up on perfectly innocent and cute images like this. If it was an image that was deliberately referencing FIW and the creepiness therein, or if it was something that COULD be construed as unintentionally creepy, I wouldn’t have a problem. But to be perfectly honest, all the “It’s not creepy” jokes pretty much made me decide that I would NEVER watch any of FIW.
Lighten up.
Must people ruin cute images like this by bringing up THAT stupid joke?
Best comment.
