Description

This is a bit of a harsh truth about horses.

If you haven’t been around them much you may not know, but horses tend to try to bite each other like every chance they can. It’s crazy. Even horses that have been stable mates their whole lives will try to nip at each other as soon as they can.

Maybe it’s a love thing? (not likely)

Yup, its a form of dominance. Most horses dont actually contact when doing this ‘biting.’ Its more of a warning notion. I have been on the end of said warning notion, yes it hurts a bit, but if I were to say they were actually biting… no. I’m around horses and ponies alot. While I am still learning from them. I do know enough to keep myself safe. Unless it’s miniatures, even when they kick, it doesnt really hurt that much. LOL Specially when they are small enough to carry around.

Biting, especially excessive biting, is generally a thing that horses do when they have not been properly socialized to establish herd hierarchies. (Typically if they are stalled alone and away from others, especially if separated from a boss mare.) For socialized horses, biting is usually only employed in extreme situations of dominance assertion. This is something that usually needs to happen before age 2, but can sometimes be corrected by careful training.
