I tend to look at alicorns as being like the Greek gods. You have the Olympians as the top gods (in this case Luna and Celestia), then you have the lesser gods and demigods below them, ones that are above mortals but just not on the same level as the top gods (Twilight, Cadance, and perhaps a few others throughout history).

Some people don’t realize that essentially Luna and Celestia are more like gods. Being an alicorn doesn’t really equal being one.  
It’d be more like if they make a character have manes like them, then there’d be reason for drama over it. It’s why Cadence has a regular mane. She may be royalty, but definitely doesn’t have as much power as Celestia or Luna (or at least the level of responsibility those two have).

Yeah, and you could also have situations where being an alicorn and being an alicorn /noble/ aren’t the same thing.
 
So maybe you get alicorn guardponies that are alicorns because of military service.
 
Actually I like the idea that a guard pony that’s fatally wounded defending Equestria gets turned into an alicorn because A) honor for /making the ultimate sacrifice/ and B) alicornification cures fatal wounds or something.
 
(And the ones that are already too far gone get revived as semi-undead batponies kekekekeke)

Sure, I get the joke. But it’s not a very good joke.

Headcanon: becoming an alicorn is culturally equivalent to getting a medal of honor. All it means is that its recipient has done something worthy of recognition and holds potential for leadership. Immortality is not a standard part of the package.
 
There may be dozens of alicorns at any one time (not including your OC, lol), but only Celestia and Luna were born as alicorns.

And when all this talk of “Rainbow Power” came into the equation, alicorns became “so last season” and went on sale for cheap among the normal populace.
 
Hence why the townsfolk didn’t see Twilight’s alicornification as strange. It’s like seeing someone with Ugg boots to them.
