I’ve actually been thinking about this. His special talent is pessimism. He works in risk analysis consultation, pinpointing everything that can possibly go wrong for his clients. Naturally, he doesn’t have a very positive outlook on life.
 
Deeper, more dubious headcanon: He was born Sour Apple, but his non-pomaceous cutie mark was something of an embarrassment to the rest of the clan. He named his daughter Babs Seed, so if something similar happens to her, at least she won’t have the shame of abandoning her name at the subtle but continual insistence of her family. He worries that she’s going to end up like him, bitter and almost never happy.

Oh and don’t forget people thinking Party of One way back in season 1 was supposedly an episode referencing Cupcakes, despite the fact said episode had been written before the brony fandom was even a thing, and all the ridiculous accusations of “pandering” regarding Magic Duel (though most of them came from CR to begin with, and I think at this point anyone who’s still a fan of the show just disregards him altogether now), even though it was confirmed the episode was written when season 1 was still airing (and was originally conceived as a season 2 episode).

Exactly. It’s like when the Gravity Falls fan base flipped their shit because there was a taco in one episode, thinking it was a reference to this shockfic called “Dipper Goes to Taco Bell”.

Ever heard of animation lead time? The episodes are written, story boarded, and animated long before they actually air. It’s like when Borderlands 2 had an “in the knee” joke, the head writer didn’t know the joke would be considered “old hat” by the time BL2 came out in mid 2012 (hell he even apologized for the joke).
