This was actually addressed in DC’s “Captain Carrot” miniseries, which also relied heavily on animal puns; they come from a universe where doing so is normal, and find our names stupid (“I bet they get a ton of washing done in Washington!”).

It’s weird once you think about why we make punny names in TV shows that just wouldn’t make sense in their world.

The “typo” might’ve been intentional, and part of the satire.
 
I like this artist, but he kinda makes the pony’s eyes look to “crazy” sometimes. (Though, I guess it suits Pinkie here, sense she’s supposed to be a li’l scary as a vampire.)
