I think maybe that movie suffered from trying to do too much at once. It seems like it was trying to cover both the origin story of Superman as Clark Kent, the whole being shot into space, growing up a farm boy, that whole shtick, but also cover the huge dramatic Zod thing at the same time and it just ends up crowded and rushed for time.
