If I was a kid now, I’d find Turbo every bit as nightmarish as the Coachman was to me. But I have to admit, he was an utter rotter.

I will, though on some level they’ll never be as dark as the ones I saw as a child - mostly because I’ll never be that child again, and these won’t be “new” to me.
Well, even modern Disney movies can get dark sometimes. (Just look at the Pirate movies, or the TVTropes “Nightmare Fuel” page for Disney.)

Must’ve gotten in trouble with the Yakuza.
He’s turning kids into donkeys to use as slave labor. The act of transformation doesn’t exactly make them lose sentience, just speech, barring some exceptions.
Since the CMC are already ponies, he could just slap a harness on them and call it a day.
