The image above is one of my original characters, Flower Tail. She’s a young unicorn whose speciality is taking care of plants, and her magic can make plants grow exceptionally fast. Despite this, she’s a hot-headed, reckless brat, and wants to prove that she’s one of the best magic users ever. She rarely thinks before she acts, meaning she often gets herself into trouble, and she doesn’t apply her magic in the right way to really be as powerful as she thinks. Still, she’s surprisingly clever when she actually bothers to think, and wants to be heroic.
 
Is she automatically a bad character? Or do you think she has the potential to be interesting despite what she may look like?

Must I repeat myself? The pony creator is just a game/program made for making your own MLP character for fun. There’s a major difference between creativity, and laziness.
 
Good Sonic and MLP OC’s come mostly from actual talented artists on Deviant Art and Tumblr.
 
As long as you think uniquely about what your doing with your character’s design, you won’t be creating a “donut steel” character.

I wrote a huge-ass reply stating why you are wrong, but reading it back to check it made sense, I just couldn’t. I bored myself too much.  
SO in short, this has nothing to do with laziness or bad OCs or anything. It’s simply quick and efficient. Even for skilled artists, some characters are just not worth anything more.
 
I myself always use it for all my OCs, then only if I get properly attached to them do I attempt to draw them. I am a bad artist though, so I’ll more likely comission.
 
I use them as part of Roleplay as I presume most people do, where you only need a basic character description anyway. The pony-makers feel like they were made for that, as you can just shoot out images of 30 different NPCS in minutes. Most of which I’ll kill and loot.

And 2. I never said that OC’s should be perfect.
 
What I mean is that if someone were to create their own MLP character, it should be at least unique looking, some clothing would be a good add-on, a hairstyle that is rarely and not commonly ever seen that often in MLP, And a color scheme for the mane and coat that isn’t used much. Creating a backstory is optional if the creator only made it for fun or practicing his/her art skills.
 
Oh and news flash: Hasbro can sometimes be lazy with the creativity and use of background ponies and just make “clones” of them or just change the color of their fur coat. This issue pretty much ended for me when Season 3 started.

Well, excuse me, Mr./Miss Everyone-Should-Have-Perfect-Art-Skills, but I had a most peculiar thought that maybe the value of an OC is more than just what they wear, what they look like, and how their image is generated. Perhaps you should consider that there are people who are perfectly good writers, want a way to show their characters’ appearances, but aren’t the best digital artists.

Well,I don’t see why you couldn’t do that.Take Pipsqueak for example.
 
But…well,one of the points of MLP is that we are watching at Multicolored Magical Little Equines.There’s noting really against using unconventional colors when someone’s creating an OC if said person actually knows how to work with the colors.
 
Just look at this list and take the first two ponies at the top,while the designs can be argued the color schemes of those two are actually good enough.
 
From what I gather,being a Character Designer can be difficult.An artist have to use their imagination/creativity and try to juggle between style,design,colors and that said design to actually being functional (especially if your design is meant to be animated).All while trying to not making it look tacky.
 
Sure you can’t just simply barge in and tell a child that their pony OCs designs “suck” because they “suck”,like that (they mostly do it for fun.And I think that’s about the 70% of the people who draw pony OC’s)but if we are talking about an aspiring artist or an artist who is trying to use their characters to tell their stories,then it wouldn’t be bad to introducing them to certain things like basic anatomy or color theory that will not only make their designs more accepted,but the practice and the constant use of those elements will certainly help them in future works.
 
Of course,that would depend on how willing the person is to listen to advice and how well is the feedback delivered.

If I were to make a ponysona I’d use actual horse colors.

The “Sailor Scout’ is dressed more like Wonder Woman.

People use the pony creator because they’re not as artistically gifted as the rest of you. Don’t judge an OC purely on what tools its creator uses. Also, Alicorn OC’s are not always bad, and execution is everything.

I don’t know about you people, but Princess Praeludere looks quite descent for a alicorn oc. Just needs to be drawn by a competent artist.
