Maybe the word “Cathedral” has a different etymology in Equestria? That tends to be my standard handwave whenever a word that belongs to something specifically from Earth cultures crops up in a fantasy setting that lacks that culture.

Also, given the amount of times the EoH were mentioned, let alone used seems to confer their status as minor Chekov’s guns, because if the greater narrative doesn’t particularly care about them, then why should I?

I think the best solution would be to put the elements on a huge underground railway network. Then when they’re needed, Rainbow Dash could draw a watch on her fetlock, and speak into it, “Elements of Harmony….It’s Showtime!” And the elements would rise out of the ground in a huge could of dust, landing on the six ponies as they rise, their gems displaying their startup sequence, “Cast in the Name of Celestia, Ye Harmonious.” Then the ponies would kick plot all over Equestria.

The Elements were never anything more than plot devices to begin with, so I really don’t give a shit how they’re handled as long as they get the job done.

Then why did her friends transform with her, and before you say that they weren’t her friends, they were alternate reality versions of them who knew her longer than their counterparts did the first time they used the Elements. Presumably alternate Twilight is an element bearer too.
