In issue 1, I was hoping for something that would smoothly complement the show, but what I ended up with was oddly tweaked character profiles, changelings who acted brain dead, poorly told jokes, and pacing problems. I’ve heard that arc found its stride a little better later on, but I never did finish it myself.
Really? I loved the first issue, (and first story arc for that matter) and honestly I wasn’t bothered by the Cadance & Shining Armor story. (The Big Mac one was quite funny though.) I can’t really judge the other story arcs as I haven’t seen them.
Only issues I had a problem with were some of the micros were kinda dull, but still kinda amusing, and cute, so I don’t dislike them. (Haven’t seen the Pinkie, Luna, or Rarity ones yet though.)
It’s not entirely a recent development. I was sort of put off by the very first issue, and nearly every story arc since then has bugged me in some way or another. That goes especially for the Shining and Cadence thing. Appealing to the nerd set in such a way was just plain lazy.
The only ones I’ve liked have been the Big Mac gazebo thing, and the one where Luna takes over for a day (and even that blew it on at least one detail).
The new parallel world story did manage to aggravate the debate that much more though, I suppose.
Eh, I don’t care we got to see ponytail’d Cadance again who’s adorable, at least.
Is it me, or are the IDW comics becoming quite “controversial” in the fandom lately?
In regards to that, Cadance wasn’t quite a “push-over” if you look at part two.
It’s like I said, all lies.
You’re not the only one.
Always seemed to me like a pretty transparent attempt to make him relate-able. For that matter, Cadance also never seemed to give off ‘most popular girl in school, prom queen’ vibes.
Hell, if anything, I’d sooner believe Cadance was the nerdy one and Armor the jock, though I guess that’s just retreading Twilight’s story in EQG.
Yeah but unicorn pony guards aren’t so much soldiers as they are wizards, and wizards are traditionally nerdy. I think the pegasera are the more traditionally jock soldiers.
I personally know quite a few people who have done military service, and it seems to me that while there are plenty of geeky dudes who join, the guys who become special forces and the like are not typically classifiable as the stereotypical “nerd”, even if they have some interests in topics that are considered nerdy.
IRL there’s honestly a lot of overlap between military nuts and tabletop RPG/strategy gamers.
I don’t buy it. It was apparent from his flashbacks and cutie mark that he’s basically always been a military nut, and his role in preparing for the Equestria Games reinforces that notion. The comic just doesn’t jive too well, although that doesn’t mean he couldn’t have had some nerdy friends.
Cadance, on the other hand, doesn’t strike me as the teenage prom queen type, even if she’s a quasi-love goddess.
Yeah… I’ve pretty much decided that in context, it’s okay to say the whole thing was almost nothing but lies.
