The writers of the actual show say all of the IDW comics are recognized by them as canon unless developments in the show overlap them.
 
Just how the show is slowly responsive to fan request, the show is allowing great story arcs to be part of the actual canon in methods they can’t do in the show.

As much as I’ve been fist pumping and cheering about this, I still got to ask: what the heck do you guys mean, “It’s canon now!”? You mean as far as the comic universe is concerned? The relation to the show only goes as far as to making sure none of these stories overlap with stories in the tv show.
 
Other than that, the limits on what they can’t add in are miniscule compared to the show. That’s why we’re able to get all these neat pop culture references they like (they’re fans of FiM too, of course). They can get away with stuff like this that you’d be hard-pressed to get in the show.
 
Sure, I like it and all, and the fact that it’s all in here at all is enough to say that it could happen, but it just seems weird to me to see so many “It’s canon!” comments like it’s now automatically canon to the animated series.
 
P.S. I’m not hating on the comic, shipping, etc. I have at least a dozen of the physical comics, and will be happily picking this one up A.S.A.P.
