That comment you’re replying to is harsher than I normally would’ve phrased it because I was making my own (semi-obscure) reference, so I am sorry about that. Though, to be honest, I would bet money that the majority of my fellow Americans under the age of 50 would have no idea who Joseph McCarthy was.
Not many probably, but mostly because it’s such a terrible ‘joke’. It took me a moment to get it not because I’m “dumb” but because it’s such an utterly unrelated reference that isn’t very funny that the mind doesn’t make the connection.
