There’s a whole planet to work with. Having Tropics, and thus tropical fruits, is a given.
Most mages I’ve met are either ‘kill you with a spoon’ crazy or ‘solve an entire nation’s problems: Tell no-one’ crazy, not ‘create a new problem nobody’s heard of then solve it’ crazy.
Equestria doesn’t have tropical regions, as far as I know. Magic may be the only way for them to get decent oranges.

Something you gotta understand is that all mages are crazy on some level or another. Trust me, stupider spells have been invented for stupider reasons.
