I like to think that that Royal Guard book was just for him to make sure his D&D character was as acurate a knight or paladin as possible, and he kinda segwayed into the job through that.

I know someone who was in the Army in the erily 90s. He got into DnD there. So I think Shinning Armor maybe the norm.

 
But Honestly, I always took Shining to be a jock and Cadance to be the booky type who had a secretish crush on him.
