Background Pony #85E9

The Discord arc in the IDW comics is one of the biggest successes of G5 so far, so it’s possible that Hasbro may allow a connection between the arc and the TYT/MYM in the future. Discord had managed to make ponies forget in the past as seen in the Cosmos arc, so it’s possible he made the Mane 5 forget him and make his own revelations a ghost story for the other ponies.

There are several unanswered questions about Discord. How had he been badly mutilated? Why did he refuse to leave Canterlot and Fluttershy’s cottage now that it is known that Twilight had likely evacuated Ponyville and possibly Canterlot? He chose to stay. And when the magic disappeared, he began to age - because part of him is a pony, and vulnerable to the disappearance of the active pony magic. That was how an immortal being like Discord had been able to age, and he was willing to sacrifice his own life to destroy the Unity Crystals.

So if Old Discord is there, he is the guardian of Canterlot - but what is he guarding? It can’t be Fluttershy’s cottage, which might have been all that remained of Ponyville. What makes him want to first destroy the Unity Crystals, then make sure the Mane 5 can’t remember him, and why he had to stay in the abandoned valley? It’s possible that Twilight, Spike and Discord split up after the second attack by Opaline, but I think it happened a bit later. We don’t yet know why Ponyville had to be evacuated - why the Everfree valley has “disappeared”, Discovery or not, from the G5 lore.

And we mustn’t forget the last part of the warning Twilight had made, that there is a possible bigger threat than Opaline, who should be prevented from doing “something” - we now know that Opaline didn’t have time to do anything before Sunny stopped her.

The SYS arc and now the Storm arc from IDW seem to pick up where the main series and the Discord arc left off, continuing along the same lines as MYM.

All we know is that Old Discord had said; “ -Fluttershy hadn`t even experienced the worst of it - “ this could mean that a lot had happened after Fluttershy’s death.

Opaline’s first attack; Spike didn’t describe what happened, just that Twilight and her friends beat her back. Discord explained what happened, the magic between the ponies was out of control.
Opaline’s second attack; Twilight had to fight her alone and had to pay a high price if Spike’s expression is anything to go by, but she defeated her and took the magic from the fire alicorn.
Spike became the lord of the dragons and evacuated the whole world for all the dragons to return to their homeland.
Ponyville is evacuated. Probably more than ten generations before the ANG movie because Twilight had moved to Zephyr Heights. The same may have happened to Canterlot.
We now know that Twilight predicted Sunny’s arrival perhaps as her successor ten generations before the ANG movie.
Twilight left Equestria.
The three unity crystals fell to earth where the guardians became responsible for maintaining the magic.
The guardians of the Unity Crystals split up after forgetting their obligations.
The magic disappeared. The pegasi, earth ponies and unicorns split up because they didn’t understand how they lost their magic.

The timeline seems to be like this;

About three and a half generations between the loss of magic and the ANG movie, when Sunny unleashed the magic. Around 90-120 years, probably 100 years.
Twilight left Equestria, the Unity Crystals are divided and dropped on Earth to three ponies who became the Guardians of the Unity Crystals. Probably a few generations before the magic disappeared.
Probably the evacuation of the Everfree valley had happened around ten generations before the ANG movie, that is 300 years. Discord may have “frozen” time in Canterlot and Fluttershy’s cottage.
Opaline’s second attack happened when Mane 6 was no more. Probably 100 years after the end of G4.
Opaline’s first attack happened just after the end of G4.

The timeline can show that there are probably 800 years as a minimum between G4 and G5.
