I like to headcanon that future Spike is employed as a guardian of Canterlot. Nothing deters a ground invasion like the prospect of dealing with a massive dragon that treats the city as his hoard.

You do know that just because he’ll get bigger, doesn’t mean his pony friends would love him any less right? If they did that, the show would miss the whole message of the show.
