There are multiple ways to praise a character you like without bringing up another to make them sound inferior. I remember there is a certain character I couldn’t bring up whenever they’re not in the fanart.

By this logic a decent collection of superheros are mary sues.
Batman, Flash, Spiderman, Static Shock.. Hell, even Superman, basically any hero who doesn’t exclusively deal with world ending threats and super villains, and also takes down normal criminals, is a mary sue, because the show revolves around them saving the day when the police or military could have handled it, when they’re just the main character of their series.

Being a main character, and powerful alone does not make a character a mary sue.
Mary Sues are powerful, infallible, and just generally get a slap on the wrist whenever they do something wrong, if they get punished at all.

How often did Twilight fuck up a situation, or make something worse, and have her friends, or a higher authority chew her out for it?
Because it was not a small amount of times, even after flanderization kicked in. Twilight was not infallible and perfect, and she had to deal with the consequences of her actions on multiple occasions.

Meanwhile, Starlight ran a cult, tried to steal the cutie marks of the mane 6, escaped justice, went on to stalk Twilight for the better part of a season, break into royal property, fuck up several timelines.
And what happens? “Aw shucks, you very nearly undid reality was we know it, but since you’re Twilight’s student now, and you have a sympathetic backstory, everything is fine!”
She’s then shown being nervous about returning to her old town, and after a bait and switch imagining of how it could go, she’s instead welcomed back with open hooves like she didn’t strip away a crucial part of their identity, and was run out of town by an angry mob of those very same ponies less than a year ago in universe.
It’s all water under the bridge, she’s a good guy now, no harm no foul.

Twilight does have mary sueish properties, but she is just a main character, that’s all.

Starlight is absolutely a mary sue, by comparison, she’s powerful enough to keep up with what amounts to physical gods in the settings, never truly faced any consequences for any of the horrible things she did, and is generally loved by anycreature that isn’t a direct villain.

Twilight is a Mary Sue because literally the entire show revolves around her and her friends saving the day when there are people who should be fully capable of doing it.

The Royal Guard, The Celestial Sister? Nope.

You literally have an episode that says if those 6 don’t get together Equestia is doomed several times over.

The world literally revolves around Twilight.

I’m not even going to get into the poor attempts at deflecting by going “but Starlight”.

Yeah, “Mary Sue” isn’t quite the right term, but Twilight (and the rest of the Mane Six) definitely had to repeat the same lessons a few too many times, and they were overdeveloped to the point of flanderization towards the latter half of the show.

her ascension to literal godhood happened way too abruptly in an anthological show that focused on other characters, and even after her ascension, she kept constantly having to relearn the same lessons over and over (just like everyone else, who were also shittily written)

but beyond that, she sort of seemed colder and colder

but yeah maybe she isn’t specifically a mary sue that’s great at everything, but her character is definitely shit and boring as all hell

by establishing early on that she was a magical prodigy with an insanely high potential, and showing her practicing and training her abilities frequently throughout the first 2 seasons, to the point where after her ascension to alicornhood, her practical application of her abilities had reached a point where she could fairly easily overpower anypony short of the literal embodiments of celestial bodies, and the primal forces of love and chaos, yet still failed more often than she succeeded due to her constantly attempting to find a more diplomatic solution to issues with the hopes of not needing to resort to brute force?
Not to mention frequently being called out whenever she made a bad decision that resulted in other characters rightfully being upset with her when she messed things up.

You know, in comparison to Starlight Glimmer who was, with offscreen training, able to perfectly match an Alicorn in terms of raw power, and was often far more likely to succeed in her endeavors, and would quickly resort to brute force and blasting with little attempts at being diplomatic, yet everyone treated like she was practically infallible and easily forgave her for making blunders just as bad as Twilights.

One of these characters is a mary sue, and it sure as hell isn’t Twilight.
