The thing about katanas, though, is that they’re from Japan, which had a huge deficit when it came to iron availability and quality. The layering tricks they came up with really only brought the quality of the weapons up to about where places like Damascus were producing without them. Turns out the crucible steel techniques Damascus employed actually formed carbon nanotubes and possibly nanowires. Modern steel outperforms both, of course.

Well, that would depend on the skill of the sword maker (and the price someone was willing to pay). You have to remember that in medieval times there was no science of metallurgy - while today we know steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, and how to get the exact proportions for the steel we want, in those days all that was known was that heating iron in a charcoal fire and then pounding on it changed it’s properties, and the skill of the smith determined what you ended up with.
One thing medieval smiths knew was how to make a harder steel, that could take a very sharp edge, and was brittle and broke easily; and also how to make a softer, resilient steel that wouldn’t hold an edge, but also wouldn’t shatter. A good swordsmith would take layers of each kind, and heat them and beat them together, to get a blank that was both hard and resilient. Then heat again, fold, and beat flat - over and over again, sometimes a dozen or more times, to get the thin and repeating pattern of hard and resilient layers to get a blade that could be sharpened like a razor and still be flexible to absorb the shock of hitting another blade.
Swordsmiths from places like Japan, Damascus, and Toledo became famous for their skill in making sharp, durable swords.

Actually, she speaks Old Equestrian. It just sounds rather Chaucerian :-)
Her armour is wood and leather, similar to a Japanese warrior, so a katana style sword seems appropriate. A stouter sword would fit better if chain mail was in fashion.
Okay. That makes sense. Actually, according to my research (made before I found this comic), I learned that the katana sword is rather stout. I believe it’s made from four or five layers of steel heated and folded onto each other and sharpened to a sharpness that would make a razor blade jealous. I’ve seen demonstrations of a katana sword cutting bamboo rolls a foot thick and never slowing down in the process.

That’s kinda the wrong sort of hammer. Hammers used for martial purposes usually had a point on one end, with the idea that it could pierce armour. Altho the one you show would be good for throwing, like a Scotsman.

Nah, Celestia does look more the part of a pacifist, but she would be the one leading the army in the field. How do I know? Because I’m pretty sure Luna would be nowhere near the field, she would be decapitating the leadership… looking at the sword quite literally

I was reminded of the Kill Bill movies when I saw her posing with the katana. I imagine Celestia is trained with weapons like that too. But in Luna’s hooves, I’d be nostalgic for that attire and weaponry of the past as well.
