Heya dn you know what? It stil is used that way too, especially on teen comedies.
Choosing to remain ignorant of a proven fact does not make it unproven. Now one can say if we use it enough it loses power, similar to negro and heeb. Regionally, it can go the other way. Neither of these words are insults in Turkey for instance. But in the EU nations and America, they were used that way up until the civil rights era, then they ‘won’ those words back. There’s been no attempt to ‘win back’ generic ‘dumb girl’ insults the way they’ve done with the more vulgar terms, or change the perception.
Basically the whole ‘riot grrl’ thing and punk in general skipped over them straight to reclaiming the most extreme, rather than tackle them all the way gays did.
however one correction is that it isn’t always for blondes, only 95% of the time. London Tipton from Suite Life definitely is written like one, but is a brunette. And on a semi-related note, the only positive portrayal to date I’ve even heard about has been Elle from Legally Blonde. Thats as much as I can possibly devils advocate that. It’s just a really rough term.
Oh no Geordies D:
@Itsthinking
Are you American?
I see “ditzy” used as an insult all the time. Everyone I know uses it only for one thing: to make fun of blondes.
I hear it used more as an insult. Used in lots of “dumb blonde” jokes.
I hear it pretty often over here, but it could be regional (I’m a geordie and you probably know what that accent gets like haha). But like I said when I hear it it’s affectionate more than insulting.
Huh.
Yet to hear it here in the UK.
Only seen it on…well pony sites.
Really? It was pretty common in the 80s, too. I see and hear it all the time, and everyone knows what it means.
I’ve yet to have seen it used, apart from when I watched American movies from the 50’s.
I have honestly never heard it used as a slur, just an affectionate..mock? I guess? Like calling someone a “ditzy bugger” it’s more a joke than an insult. Whereas “Derpy” has proven connotations? Eh. BP just has a grudge.
Also thank you, nice to have someone on my side of this argument for a change haha
I see it all the time. Guarantee people would associate “ditzy” negatively and not know what a nonsense word like “derp” means.
Not since the 50’s. (Around here, anyway.)
But it is a slur.
nice job calling her a slur against blonde people, then, you ignorant chode.
Derpy sez: Stop yer fussin’ and has a tiny pussin’!
He’s also technically correct. (The best kind of correct)
Haha. Ahahaha. Ha.
You’re funny.
After all, you wouldn’t want that fine new cut of yours to get messy would you?
