Yeah, I think that's the case too. Though, I could see it be a little deeper than that; the movie makes it very clear that Hitch LOVES being loved, admired, looked at like a hero. He revels and even encourages the praise. I think Hitch values being beloved and admired just as much as he values being credible. Continuously going easy on the town's troublemaking outcast could've come in between that too.
