Even if I were to play devil's advocate and I felt the need to believe in some all-knowing and loving higher power, I would not really think of the popular stories told in association with the Bible as describing that. I'd have to have some kinda belief independent of our books and tales.

"Thou shalt have no other gods before me". Why? People believe in a bunch of different gods, all with the same amount of real evidence. Zero. AND the same reason they usually believe their's in particular: blind adherence to local culture.

Even many liberal Churches still teach that, without Jesus, you go to Hell. ........Here's my issue. A god that would let people burn forever for the simple (non-)crime of being the wrong proofless belief in a world full of many does not sound very loving. If a man lit his kid on fire for sticking their hand in a cookie jar, we would not think that this man was just giving discipline and structure to the kid, and that the kid should have known better. We'd call him the man a monster and rightfully so.

I went on Tuesday this week, unfortunatly it was to attend a funeral. The priest gave his homily, fuck me, did her drone on and on and on, not making any connection to the family of the deceased or making any logical point in what every fucking message he was trying to convey.
I thought to myself after 10 minutes of listening to his shit, "no wonder no one goes to church any more"

Several years ago me and my friends would go to church but it wasn't for the reason you would think if you would like to know the reason send me a private message

 

Raised RC. Attended Catholic school through 8th grade (got an excellent education). Served Mass as an altar boy. Stopped believing in God or any Supreme Being when the other side of life became known and felt (homelessness, lack of drug intervention, lack of support for abused, etc.). Over the years I have attended various religious offerings through a wish to learn. What are Southern Baptists compared to Baptist? Welsh Methodism comparison to Church of England. What is the root of the AME Church (African Methodist Episcopalian - I hope I got that correct). Why do Hindus and Muslims not get along? Etc. I stayed with a Methodist Minister and his wife in California. Even gave a Sunday Sermon on my lack of religious beliefs. A need to learn can be very strong and cut a different path.

 

No but my wife does. There was a time that I would go with her on holidays because she liked it when I went with her. I'd participate, stand and sing along, say the prayers. It dawned on me one day that I'm lying when I did that. I haven't gone in over 5 years.
