Fun Fact the Third: This scene was inspired by a wreck which happened at Union Station in Washington D.C.  
In 1953, a Federal Express train coming into the station lost its braking power, smashed into the concourse, a newsstand, and the stationmaster’s office before plunging through the main floor into the basement.  
The kicker? This happened just days before Eisenhower’s inauguration, so instead of pulling the engine out, engineers (The structural type) just rebuilt the floor over the engine in the basement.  
The locomotive (PRR No. 4876) was later recovered, restored in Altoona, and put back into service before being retired in 1983.

Another fun fact: This scene was done full scale. The engines were props, I think a dressed up truck, but the destruction was real. The Chicago station was a giant set built in an aircraft hanger.

Silver Streak is an amazing movie and everyone should see it.

Fun fact: The extra dressed as the cop really is dragging that girl out of the way. She was standing off position and came close to getting run over by the prop engines.
