Looked more like you were just using the bedsheet as proof that the show was 2D

Not impossible but more often the not unlikely. I already new he confirmed he only worked on the series I just questioned the bedsheets & other merch so you can keep your attitude in check it’s flaring.

Yep Cause it’s impossible for merchandise to have its own art
Also you think some sheets say morethe show than someone actually involved with it?
Odd 2D interpretations of 3D characters for a piece of merchandise… that are off-model; Pipp’s eyes are the wrong color
@northern haste
Whats this then?
There are ways to do this efficiently, by having a bunch of pre-built basic rigs for bodies and hair and eyes that they can swap around and mix and match and tweak with colors and scaling to create background ponies and additional characters. They seem to be doing this already – the four mares of the Mane Five already share the same body shape. G4 did the same thing, just in Flash. It will take some effort, but recycling existing assets is more efficient and looks better than lowering the overall design quality.
As for “detail,” I can almost guarantee you that the fur texture is a shader and/or a height map. It’s not like each one of those fuzz divots was hand-placed. 3D animation is really sophisticated and there are a lot of built-in shortcuts to automatically handle finer details using randomly-generated noise. I think the G5 series will probably look as good as the movie. :)
Some effort will be involved, particularly when designing environments, but I don’t think it’ll be unreasonable.

You know, that’s a very good point. I genuinely hope you’re right, because that would be freaking awesome.
But, then again, they’d probably need to make new models for other characters/races later on, which would cost a pretty penny. It might appear jarring to have these super high detail models for the MCs while the side characters get stuck with something typical of a much lower production budget. I’d also imagine the backgrounds in the show will be a massive step down from the film, since I’m certain there will be plenty of diverse locations that each individual episode takes place in. I have to wonder if they’d intentionally downgrade the MC ponies’ models purely so they don’t look too incongruous when juxtaposed against the newer assets…
Well, I guess we’ll see what happens in the years to come. I’m kinda getting a bit impatient waiting for the Netflix series since I know it’ll be mid-2022 at the earliest >.<
There is no need to change the character models for the series. If they’re built, rigged with a movable skeleton, and ready to go, why downgrade their quality? It’s not like the episodes are using real-time rendering like video games.
You might be thinking of animation quality (the characters’ movements), which may be downgraded due to less time to tweak spline curves. Or not; perhaps additional skill and knowledge of keyboard shortcuts can let them do the same amount of work in less time.
Perhaps this would have been a bit more accurate: “I’m so glad they went with the little snub nose approach instead of the actual horselike snouts of previous generations.”
I know this’ll sound kinda blasphemous considering the website I’m currently posting on, but I’ve never really found IRL horses to be very aesthetically pleasing creatures. The main factor that kept me away from G1~3 was the faces too heavily resembling the structure of an actual horse’s face. It just looks uncanny and kinda scary imho. No offense to the plentiful people browsing this site who completely disagree with me on this stance.
In G4, I’d argue the characters looked more like Alpacas or Llamas than Equines. (And I should probably note that I absolutely LOVE anything to do with Llamas xD)
The G5 show will most likely reuse the movie models
CG =/= toon boom
How do you know?
The Tv Show will be in 2D not 3D…..
I think you exaggerated what elongated is.
They always had elongated snouts in past generations. First gen to change things up in that regard was G3.5 and subsequently G4.
I’m sure you remember this:
When was their snouts elongated? They’re short and pointy. Except for stallions where they’re slightly elongated and squarish.
This is elongated:
True. The quality of the character models definitely looks very impressive. I’m just apprehensive about the inevitable downgrades when the actual G5 series rolls around. Feature films and episodic series have a very large disparity in budgetary constraints, so I’d imagine the character models will be significantly lower quality in the show.
(And let’s be real, the series is going to be the “meat-and-potatoes” of G5. The film is a mere appetizer.)
At least it looks to be high quality 3D, as opposed to a lot of childrens programs done in 3D animation that’s nightmarishly bad.
My second biggest fear was that it would end up being 3DCG >.<
