Aside from the argument of “how powerful is Starlight” and what factors into that that I’m not getting into (how practiced she might be with combat magic, inherent talent for such [how naturally fighting goes] for one thing), the primary reason Sunset was said to be weaker than Unicorn Twilight was because she’s way out of practice in using magic, in the context of EQG, also as a result of her not finishing her studies, having left prematurely, went rogue, years ago, to a world without magic/very little magic without a mentor.
 
Sunset, if she stayed in Equestria (I’m assuming this would be in the context of an AU), is one who prefers the practical side of magic/science, according to herself, in that she prefers doing things/being hands-on over reading, which is something she seems to have in common with Starlight (who at the very least leans more that way than Twilight), so she’d probably be better in practical use than Twilight. Like, I highly doubt for instance that Sunset, were she in Twilight’s place at the beginning of the series, would’ve needed to learn how to teleport from Nightmare Moon doing it to her, would’ve likely already been adept at that spell to start, to compensate for not having an instant copy ability like Twilight or having it to a lesser extent.
 
All of that being said, Starlight, even if she’s being slightly nerfed in the context of an AU, might be a bit too OP to reasonably trick into submission with the Alicorn Amulet, and might not have had her ego bruised in the first place to the point of resorting to “I need something that ungodly powerful to boost me.”

This makes no sense. Why would Starlight Glimmer; an equal to Alicorn Twilight, need an amulet to match Sunset; someone who’s described by staff as strong but far weaker than Unicorn Twilight?
