The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

Man I knew i had this shitty feeling all weekend like there was a disturbance in the force or something.

And my Fluttershy vinyl figure got withheld by the post because it was raining today. :(

Dude, you covered just about everything. As someone who was there and in the midst of it, I promise that as bad as that sounds it was even worse on the ground. No vendors made money the charities had their funds thrown into the main pot and lost for awhile, vips and brony celebs were thrown out of their previously comped rooms. It was really bad.

I think the reason everyone is being tight lipped is cause nopony wants to make things worse. Were all waiting to see what happens next and what the official word is about the state of things. None of us want to be like purple tinker throwing around batshit accusations and being a general asshole.

Looks like this is going to be a big problem for the fandom going forward.

@Background Pony
I’ve been trying to find info too, since not that many people are talking about it. Seriously, for as bad at it was you’d think everyone would be discussing it. Nope. The ones who were actually there are being surprisingly tight-lipped. I’m hoping this changes soon.

{ahem} Anyway, here’s what I’ve been able to piece together…

The con itself was extremely disorganized, with panels starting late, early, or cancelled. One autograph session ended half an hour before the program said it would start.

Unicon organizers massively overestimated the expected number of attendees. From what I heard, they expected, planned, and budgeted for 2000, but only got ~1200.

Because of this – and general poor money management – the con blew through what cash they had on hand early on, but still had expenses to cover.

For one, when the hotel realized that there were still bills outstanding, their staff started shutting down the con, kicking people out of panel/vendor rooms.

The biggest problem, though, was that Unicon had promised the guests – not just the VA’s, but writers & artists – that all expenses would be covered. On Sunday, the hotel staff demanded payment for their rooms. This is a minor annoyance for the actors (who make enough money to be able to cover such things), but was absolutely devastating for the lesser guests, who were slapped with multiple-hundred-dollar tabs they couldn’t afford.

Once it became clear the con was broke, the con management disappeared. This threw floor proceedings into even more chaos than already existed (check out M.A Larson & Daniel Ingram’s tweets on how disorganized it was). Orgs like EFR & EQD, who already had con experience from their work at BroNYcon, had to step in and run the few panels that weren’t cancelled.

THEN everyone heard about the dire financial situation, and that guests had not been paid. EFR started literally “passing the hat” trying to collect donations from the people watching the livestream. John DeLancie’s agent apparently agreed to be the point-man for the thing, in charge of making sure the donation money went to the right people.

While all this was going on, Purple Tinker (not sure where she fits in the fandom) got on her Twitter and took potshots at Final Draft, questioning his motives and basically accused him of running a scam. She deleted her tweets later, apologizing for “stirring the pot”.

Finally (yes I’m almost done), one attendee posted on EQD that Unicon was selling a type of autograph that Hasbro hadn’t cleared – VA cellphone messages. This is very worrisome because Hasbro might see it as breach of contract (something you really don’t want to do).

The meltdown of Unicon was so bad that it’s almost a given there will be dire negative consequences throughout the convention circuit. Plenty of people are currently wondering if there will be any more cons at all after this summer, assuming either that guests won’t want to do any more cons after the bad experience in Las Vegas or Hasbro will ban show staff from attending future cons.

So… yeah. That’s what I understand happened. Anyone with more info please speak up.

Can someone clue me in on just went wrong? I’ve heard quite a few people say it wasn’t great, but I haven’t heard any specifics.
Merrimack

Last time I went to Vegas, some douche in a checkered suit shot me in the head and buried me in some hick town on the outskirts of California.

Thank god for cowboy robots or I’d be a dead man.
