discord has changed a lot over the years
 
And it was all thanks to him getting a second chance and plenty of help from Fluttershy. When he escaped he went right back to doing evil things and when he was released he streight up mocked the ponies for trying to reform him. It’s a shame the trio didn’t get the same chance he did.

He has the same feelings they do. His species is no excuse for the things that he did. He can cause chaos just fine without hurting others. If his nature really did make him commit all the things that he did then he would be impossible to reform.
 
turning him to stone no matter what he’s done while he’s trying to be better would be very cruel
 
About as cruel as needlessly turning three already defeated villans (by the same attack that stoned Discord but only took away their powers no less) to stone without so much as attempting to reform or give them a second chance and with one of them being a literal child.

Discord didn’t deserve however many chances he got. He kept doing shit for 8 seasons yet is still allowed to roam free and keeps getting forgiven.
Discord teams up with Tirek and helps him steal all magic in Equestria. He is instantly forgiven by everyone. Discord sends Twilight and her friends on a fake friendship mission so he can cause chaos at the school of friendship and tries to kill students. Starlight and spike forgive him. Discord impersonates Grogar, revives every fucking villain in the show, gives them a powerful artifact and encourages them to take over Equestria. Not only is he forgiven again, but he’s even allowed to choose their punishment.
Discord has failed to reform many times and keeps getting away with shit. He should have been turned back to stone, and the stone statue should have been shattered into a million pieces scattered across time and space, so it would be impossible to be restored.
 
Actually no discord has changed a lot over the years learning to value love, developing a friendship with Big Mac and Spike, learning to ask to be involved, he has also had two heroes frontier steps going into changeling territory to rescue fluttershy without any powers and risking his life to deflect a beam that could have killed him to free the ponies and is seen joining the battle against the 3 villains without any powers, as fluttershy said he makes a lot of mistakes but your accusing him of being downright evil, he also always learns a new lesson u also gotta remember he is a spirit of chaos and we can’t put the same standards of normal beings on him, in season 9 he was genuinely making a effort to help twilight turning him to stone no matter what he’s done while he’s trying to be better would be very cruel.

Alternatively, we should have been treated to a sort of pantheon hierarchy that Discord has to answer to, where one of the fellow members has Discord on thin ice and has enough power at his disposal that by speaking his name aloud would cause Discord to reconsider taking certain actions should he learn that his worshippers and followers were being harassed by Discord.

Indeed. It felt as though they started on one story, and then delivered on a different one. I was actually interested to see these guys reformed, and then found myself watching a bewildering finale that felt like a non-sequiter after Frenemies. I was so put off by the petrification I didn’t even watch the final episode. Still haven’t.

Good ways to have helped showcase some redeemable qualities for the trio that the writers should have created that would have been believable and serve as an avenue for them to become better.
 
Tirek feels that he has been betrayed by his younger brother Scorpan, and that he lives within the shadows of his disapproving father King Vorak; yet there doesn’t seem to be any sort of animosity from his mother Queen Haydon. There might have been possibility that Scorpan was lied to by Starswirl that his brother was to be imprisoned in Tartarus only temporary, and that in his brothers absence; Scorpan managed to do something better than what Celestia did when Luna fell: instead of erasing any and all traces of his sibling and unknowingly elevate himself as the better sibling, Scorpan managed to showcase the good leadership qualities of Tirek that Scorpan had recognized and told their subjects to anticipate for Tireks’ return and to welcome him with open arms.
 
Scorpan: “I believed that my brother deserves to be remembered for his lifetime of dedicated and valiant service to our kingdom, and not for the tragic missteps that he made in his later years.”
Rainbow Dash: “Missteps?!”
Scorpan: “What Tirek did to your nation was reprehensible, I am not here to argue differently. But does one lapse in judgement truly negate all of his good? Do we not all have regrets? You may have met Lord Tirek, but you didn’t meet my beloved older brother; before he fell from grace…”
 
Queen Chrysalis’ reasons for attacking Equestria and focusing all of his efforts on killing Starlight Glimmer is motivated solely by personal revenge at the believed murder of her own family, one that she has hidden behind her own queenly mask and the emphasis that Starlight Glimmer “Stole her Hive” because she doesn’t want to showcase the deep-seated emotional weakness of the supposed deaths of both her husband and their secret daughter, unaware that in-truth the both of them are still alive and well.
