The Equestrian military is not badass. That’s why Shining Armor is captain of it; he manages to be badass enough (he threw his own wife and turned her into a legitimate projectile when both of them were weak or otherwise incapacitated) that he’s better than the rest of the military. And every apperance he’s in, he’s nice unless it matters, then he’s a jerk because he needs to be.

Yeah, I always thought he was a pretty lousy brother based on his actions in the show. It’s the fan-made creations that put him in a more positive light.
