Yes, but he still betrayed Fluttershy, the pony who first worked towards becoming his friend in the process.
But he also thought he had a more compatible friend with Tirek, only to find out that he only used him to gain more power.
When he was released, when he betrayed the ponies for Tirek, that time he almost sent Tree Hugger to another dimension, that time he decided to take revenge for not being invited to manage the school, leading to him endangering students and season 9.

Like how Discord initially rejected it before getting plenty of help from Fluttershy, or Starlight.

But it was still their decision to reject friendship and continue their evil ways.
The trio hide the bell from the evil guy who brought them together by force and was constantly threatening them while learning to work together in the meantime.
But what happened at the end of this scene?
Because they deserved better. If Starlight, Discord and Tempest get second chances and at times, multiple, then a guy who’s already spent 1000 years in a cage, a mentally ill changeling and a child deserve it as well.
But why defend the trio?
That was a reaction from the trio, who may I remind you, decided to let him go at first. Not a punishment for what he did to them and how he played his part in causing the trio’s rise.
