This was basically “Goblet of Fire”, where the games were only a backseat to the actual drama, but overly focused on both the book and movie.

I think if the games had more behind them, like higher stakes, they would have more purpose. When I first heard Unleash the Magic, I honestly thought there might have been a dark twist regarding Crystal Prep. The tension during the scene in the movie is slightly foiled by the thought that they’re only doing it for a simple competition.
 
However, it doesn’t really bother me. Just a little ‘what if.’

The movie might have been better if they’d focused more on Evil!Twilight and less on that awful Friendship Games. Though that could have been saved too if they’d given the Crystal prep kids any actual personalities at all.

Oh yeah. And remember, Twilight Sparkle was able to build it in a cave supply closet, with a box of scraps. She could build more. If she saved the schematics, anyone could build more. Ponykind should be terrified.
