It’s pretty much executive meddling that wanted two more alicorns to make for marketing to children. I pretty much accept Cadance and Alicorn Twilight but I do pity that they derailed her concept for the sake of profit over story appeal.

Originally there were TWO. Then they made a hamfisted change to Cadance to sell more toys and screwed the entire mythos over.

There are only two. I don’t think Cadance and Twilight are on the same level as Celestia and Luna

Now I’m really curious where Celestia, Luna and Cadence came from. I mean, we saw Cadence as an Alicorn when she was still a child, so that implies she was born that way and not created like Twilight, and probably isn’t immortal like Celestia…
