We can argue whether or not it was really an execution, but if one were to be stuck as a stone statue for presumably all of eternity, “together forever” as Discord put it, it may as well have been a death sentence.

Doesn’t help that Discord did not bother trying to help at all using his power to help Equestria.  
Only time I remember he tried too was due to Fluttershy got nabbed by Chrysalis but it ended up failing due to Chrysalis conveniently having a anti-magic stone throne.  
All other times, Discord choose to not help for the sake of “teaching” Twilight or he is just an asshole.  
Sure made Celestia look like an idiot since he never used his magic to HELP Equestria.

I’ve been saying that for a while too. It’s practically the reason Celestia immediately felt the need to reform a powerful creature such as Discord not even a full year after he broke free. Not to mention all the chances he’s been given even after he’s reformed.
 
Where as they saw Cozy as just a small useless filly with no magic that could serve them no purpose, so they dispose of her immediately to Tartarus. Cozy had a point. Friendship truly is power.

and of where it is appropriate to draw a line at certain levels of punishment between Adults and children: where the Adult Unicorns get passes while child Pegasi get punishments. It really paints a negative picture where it seems like Redemption is only reserved for ponies if you have a Horn and can or could do Magic… just think about that for a moment: the only reason why Starlight Glimmer, Stygian, Tempest Shadow, The Flim Flam Brothers, Sunset Shimmer and Trixie got away with what they did was because they could do Magic while Cozy Glow; a born Pegasus could not… no wonder the Three Tribes ended up dividing in G5 with a Unicorn supremacist attitude like that.

Because some people wanna discuss on the moral ethics of child execution in a show about friendship and candy colored ponies.

Because of two key phrases that can help to make or to break a long running series based entirely on the feedback and interactivity of the genre or series’ audience: “Growing the Beard” and “Jumping the Shark”.
 
The judgement of what happened with Cozy Glow for most of us was when the show had Jumped it’s Shark and the entire narrative that we have been carefully following and enjoying for nearly 10 years fell apart for us. Why should we care about the series’ setting if the characters in it were so willing to abandon all of their morals and ethics that they have carefully built up for 8 Seasons just so close to the finish line? Why should we give any crap at all about the poor writing and storytelling of the project if it was what helped us get into the show in the first place?
 
Without a satisfying story or payoff that could properly send off the characters in a believable fashion that would leave their morals intact; what would be the point of staying for the very last episode if it would just serve as much of the same poor drivel that the second-to-last episode served us?
 
I had seen moments where shows I once loved ended up falling completely apart narratively in the past to try and serve the needs of some checkbox in the corner that the producers or stockholders put up, it was one of the reasons why I no longer wanted to watch Ben 10 following the character assassination of its protagonist during Season 3 of Alien Force that managed to carry on throughout the shows run by the financiers trying to walkback all of Ben’s character development that was shown in Seasons 1 & 2 in order to make him as immature as his OG self from the original Series. I even went and made a short video about my distain for how Ben got rid of his Modesty to embrace Arrogance.

the arguments and exploration of the messages of Punishment vs. Redemption that the show had long abided by, and of how Seasons 8 & 9 have worked at cross-purposes to negate all of that commitment towards the notion of Redemption in order to create a “Subvert Expectations”-style villain just because the authors saw it happen in the much reviled Star Wars 8 The Last Straw and thought “Hey, we should do that too.” and not bothered to take a step back and consider “Is this a good idea for our story narrative?” when taking into account how there were individuals that actually did MORE severe harm that Twilight had allowed to redeem and go off with just a slap on the wrist, whereas by-comparison a pony much younger than the other villains were and had less of a defined motive and justification to her actions wound up being severely and harshly punished enough that it would have served to not only negate redemption but to also actively hate the protagonist even further; then she ends up getting punished for being part of another scheme made by Discord to make Twilight gain confidence and demolishes the entire narrative premise altogether.

What is really at stake here? A fictional character in a slice of life fantasy cartoon got treatment some people think is unfair. What consequence does that have that’s worth so much debate?

interestingly, this could be turned around in-favor of Cozy Glow. For the most part; the only crime that was tied in with her alone was the attempted theft of all Magic from Equestria, a plot that was foiled in the end. Twilight asked her why she did what she did; and Cozy had cringed that was followed up by giving a loose-defined explanation for her actions. In most cases; this could be left well-alone. Yet already we have seen Magic doing a number of things in the past; it wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination that so too would a Geas exist as a potential spell or curse to inflict on an individual.
 
 
Instead of trying to do a more sensible thing such as telling off her parents or sending her to be rehabilitated or scanning her body for corruptive Magic like a Geas; something that a normal Princess of Friendship should do, they just deemed Cozy Glow to be a lost cause and throw her into Tartarus: specifically; placing her cage right next to the individual that she had been in contact with before that had started this calamity in the first place and had already shown he could have escaped again by having done so beforehand. And nobody realized that this was trouble waiting to happen? Backing it up to “Lost Cause”, might I reintroduce you to Stygian who was antagonized by his mentor Starswirl; thinking that his student was trying to destroy the Pillars and had cast him out; and in his sorrow returned as The Pony of Shadows? Or how about some other Ponies that had already done equal if not more direct harm to those closest to Twilight and to Equestria in the past: ponies like Starlight Glimmer who had enslaved a township; imprisoned Twilight Sparkle and her friends after stripping them of their Cutie Marks and tried to break their minds all in just her first appearance. That was immediately followed up by her stealing the Time Scroll in an attempt to rewrite history so she could come out on top at the detriment of the rest of her own nation… several times. What was Starlight Glimmers’ punishment? She became Twilight Sparkles’ student, forgiven of her crimes. Then there’s Tempest Shadow, the high commander of The Storm King’s armada who had personally led the invasion of Mount Aris and later conducted the three day long invasion of Equestria after having trapped Celestia, Luna and Cadence in obsidian: all with the intent on stripping them of theirs and Twilights’ Magic to fuel The Storm King’s own ambitions of world conquest and damning her own people into slavery. What did she get in the end? She was released and sent out to inform the other nations of The Storm Kings’ defeat, forgiven of her VERY high national and international crimes. And somehow, compared to two ponies who had broken the rules of Time and had betrayed their own nation: it was Cozy Glow who could barely hold a candle to their destructive potential was punished most severely?
 
I fail to see the logic behind your argument.
 
Then there is the matter with Discord trying to mobilize her, Tirek, and Chrysalis as part of his master plan to get Twilight Sparkle mentally-prepared to handle anything that would come at her during her new rule over all Equestria. It was all on Discord that everything happened as it happened in the first place.  

Could you really blame Cozy Glow for lashing out at Equestria as she did? With the discovery of Grogar being Discord all along and having drained him of his Magic; from her perspective: it had seemed like Discord was planning on not using them to dethrone Twilight Sparkle and take over Canterlot but to instead use them as a show for a public execution of the three of them to cement Twilight’s new rule. In this moment, to Cozy Glow it had seemed like Equestria had demonized her to create this perfect storm to wash away everything that they had once stood for. There literally was no longer an Equestria to live within in this case; only a twisted and wicked nation ruled by a hypocrite that passed judgement on whomever twisted her ire, and had already conquered most of the other nations and mobilized them to her agenda and cause. There was no other place for them to live should they try to run away; in all ways the three of them would constantly be hunted for the crime of someone elses’ doing regardless of whether Discord got his Magic back or not.
 
In many ways, Cozy would have felt very similar to Spinel from Steven Universe: a Gem that was once made specifically to be friends with Pink Diamond only to be left abandoned in her Garden under the pretense of “playing a game” with who she thought was her best friend; leaving Spinel completely alone for thousands of years unaware that her master had fought a war against herself, gave up her life to create a child, and having that child go and upturn the entirety of the Gem Empire while she was left alone and forgotten. Spinel would lash out at how Pink Diamond had abandoned her all this time that she thought was playing a game and leave her with some deep-seated trust issues even after she was Reset to factory default that was mirrored by how Steven kept leaving her to help restore Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl. Then when she had opened up and remembered everything that had happened and was convinced that things with Steven would now be better after turning off the Injector, it had seemed like she was only being used to do that one thing and that Steven would leave her after just like Pink Diamond did; causing Spinel to relapse based on mounting paranoia.

Cozy wasn’t a threat until she decided to use the dark powers of artifacts as weapons to harm others and to join a group of villains with the intention of destroying Equestria.  
The fact that she is a filly is irrelevant, for example, if you give a child a gun, this doesn’t make it any less dangerous, especially if the child in question has bad intentions and doesn’t know how to use it properly.  
Then this story of continuing to blame Twilight and her friends for this, it’s becoming more of just cringe.  
Twilight and her friends just defended themselves, as anyone who was attacked so violently would.  
If they hadn’t defended themselves, they would have probably died, Equestria would have been destroyed and would have endangered the other creatures of the other lands as well.  
They had responsibilities and had no other choice.  
They have always behaved with the best of intentions, it is not fair to keep blaming them just because they may have made a mistake.  
All people make mistakes, even the most competent, especially if they are just little ponies and not gods on earth, they can’t always make miracles and solve all the problems of others.  
I would be curious to know if anyone in their shoes could have done better in that situation.
