Generic? How many time have we seen him standing in the background.

I don’t see anything wrong with his design, but I could just be missing something.

Which ones exactly?
 
-Twilight: Mother is virtually a palette swap of Twilight a slight change to the end of her mane is the only real difference. Father uses the standard Stallion model and a standard Background mane, only changes are his coloring.  
-Pinkie: Father uses the standard Stallion model in a very subdued color selection no less. The only change is a slight bag under the eye to imply age and a unique hair design, the same pretty much goes for the mother.  
-RD’s Dad: Standard stalltion model, but using a mane I don’t think we’ve ever seen on a stallion and a completely unique hair coloration.
 
All three have about the same level of distinction about one or two major points besides color that set them apart from normal background ponies. ONLY rarity’s are an exception they’re much more unique, but they also appeared in the present and spoke. That probably justified the extra effort put into them. Even beyond that I’d defend the minimalist approach myself you call it boring I call it ‘realistic’ or ‘grounded’.
 
Really why do dash’s parents need to be really different or ‘cool’ exactly? Indeed to some extent I rather like the contrast of a rather plain and ‘generic’ parent against the often flamboyant child.

Uhhh… Twilight may be simpler, but whatever.

Actually, other than her distinctive Rainbow mane and tail. Rainbow has a pretty straight forward design compared to the rest of the mane cast.

He’s nothing special, but I’m okay with it…I mean, Twilight’s Dad is pretty generic as well.

That’s all he has going for him. If his mane wasn’t just like a shorter rattier version of Dash’s, and the outline color was different, or the inside colors were a little different, or even possibly less rainbowlike.

This still leaves the door open for G3 Rainbow Dash to be the mother! :-3
