What a great pic…
The only “bug” of the pic is that Dash and Flutters has been long acquaintances before the very first episode (and we know that already in Season 2, which was before this pic’s publication date), so it’s probably not optimal to depict Dash as the bug in the last panel…
Such a marvelous and (I dare say!) underrated piece, this little gem. Aside from the striking artwork, with the earthy colors and floral accents conveying the sense of security Fluttershy craves for, and rapid transitions and action lines put against them to establish the conflict without any words at all, it has quite a powerful story behind it.
Told through metaphors — both visual and verbal, — it establishes a definite view on the life story of the pegasus while leaving a handful of blanks for the viewer to fill in themselves. It is for this very reason the work appeals so much to me (and the previous comment posters, I believe) — it is not only beautiful, or even emotionally charged, but thought-provoking as well.
Actually, I think the Mane Six are the first close and true friends - that she’s had. She obviously had an insane number of acquaintances, and ponies she partied with, but it’s fairly clear to me that those were pretty shallow, if generally positive, relationships. It shows in “The Party of One”, when she collapses into depression and shuts out the reality when she convinces herself that she’s lost the friendship of Twilight and others. That’s not the action of a pony who has a whole bunch of friends.
Though I wonder how Pinkie would have been different since she already had quite a few friends in Ponyville unlike the rest of the mane six. To our knowledge, at least.
