It can’t have been that bad; we see the CMC again later in the issue and they aren’t traumatized or anything. Wouldn’t surprise me at all if it was later revealed to not be that bad and the discretion show is just a fakeout. But yeah, this is surprisingly dark for MLP.

That’s because FoE and PH are all grimdark all the time, so murder and rape are just normal and losses all impact.
 
This however is taking place in MLP canon as a result its far more effective and shocking to see someone do something this evil.
 
Kinda like wend in Star War or Star Trek when alderaan is blown up or the battle of wolf 359 are major galaxy changing events, but for 40k its every other week.
