He’s not always that way, he is a bit clumsy, or goes oveboard at times too. So I never really saw him as the “only sane man,” or “total klutz” personally.
 
Truthfully, I wasn’t even that upset by the hated “Spike At Your Service” episode, as he seems to mostly screw up when he tries too hard, (like he was trying too hard to be nice to AJ) which seemed in-character to me, and the ending of the episode showed he still had some competence, (as he wasn’t fooled at all by the fake Timberwolf) and he did defeat the giant Timberwolf.

I think DWK described it best. Spike and Twilight are not allowed to be competent simultaneously. It’s a switch, and can only be in one position at a time.

Probably, and being basically the only main male character, maybe some try to identify, or project themselves onto Spike too much. Maybe that’s why some fans are notoriously overprotective of Spike, and get angry everytime he does something comical, or they feel he isn’t being treated fairly…
 
I remember seeing some oddball claiming the show was “sexist against males/Spike,” which I feel is going overboard, and Spike has gotten respect in the show many times before. Sometimes he was portrayed more level-headed & reasonable then Twilight.

Correct, the problem is that people tend to identify with Spike, and see themselves friendzoned. Which is honestly to be expected, because he’s a good 5-10 years younger than Rarity and he’s a dragon which means he’s slower to age and mature.

In fairness, she was actually very nice to him for the most part. It’s like fans only pay attention to the comical moments, and never the nicer moments of Rarity’s character.

Hopefully yes, that episode made my shipping senses tingle.

Spike: Yeah. That was when you were young and beautiful. You were so married to your work that any time I spent with you was either helping you out in your work, or a rare social activity. Plus, you kept chasing all those other stallions, when you did attempt anything regarding romance and dating. I chose to move on, once it became clear that I wasn’t going to get a chance to have any romantic relationship with you.

Besides, I think you would only be together for ten years or so.
