I think the writers of the show didn’t know how to make a group of well-balanced and not overpowered characters. I guess it doesn’t really matter in the end because it’s only slice of life.
 
But I will say it does feel a little lazy having Twilight, Rarity and Starlight being able to have all the abilities of pegasi and earth ponies. Especially in fighting.
 
It’s not a big deal considering the genre, but I think it is a wasted creative opportunity. That’s what ATLA’s fighting so great. It was all so balanced.

They still hold that advantage over Rarity, the other unicorn on the show.

But the elements can only be used all at once. It’s not a deal where you can just use 5 and get some of the power. She might still retain her element, there’s been nothing to suggest otherwise.
 
 
And Flutter’s needs to fly when she’s taking care of the birds and stuff. She just doesn’t fly when scared. Which…is 90% of her screen time, but still.

I just came to say that the new spoiler image for s03e13 is awesome.

Twilight by herself is still no match for the elements of Harmony, which Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy still have.
 
Plus fluttershy doesn’t fly much anyway, it’d probably make zero difference if she was an earth pony.

Twilight Sparkle was already overpowered compared to the other Mane Five. She could’ve given herself flying wings at any time (she did Rarity instead), and cloud-walking (trivial; done for everyone but Rarity). And I’d be amazed if she couldn’t affect the weather if she put her mind to it, even if she hadn’t ever actually done it. But this isn’t a D&D game. There’s nothing wrong with having a talented friend. Love Twilight for what she is.

Well, the only big difference I see is that the fly/trot ration will now be 3 ponies who can fly (Twi, Dash, and Flutters), and 3 who can’t (Rarity, Pinkie, and AJ).

Celestia still goes everywhere in her chariot despite having wings and being able to teleport. Luna had a chariot in Luna Eclipsed too. Maybe Twilight should get one too (just $29.99!)

What I’m more concerned about is it rendering Twilight Sparkle’s balloon obsolete.
