Season 5, Starlight redeemed. _Yep  
Season 6, My Little Starlight Glimmer _Indeed  
Season 7…nothing, actually. We got a break. _{I’d argue that My Little Starlight Glimmer part 2: Electric Boogaloo would be this season’s controversy as well}  
Season 8, Schoolchildren _{More the School of Friendship than the students themselves}  
Season 9, end of ponies tag _{Yes, ironically}
 
And that’s not even getting into Equestria Girls and all the controversy that initially caused.

You know… I wonder if anyone is screaming at that second screencap, not because of Princess Twilight’s appearance, but because of the pony in the background.

Well, for one, that was supposed to be the series finale.  
For another, wait for G5. Alicorns are back to that status.

Yep, which was what my problem with original Twilicorn was. From the beginning I expected Twi to become an alicorn, but I also expected it to be an endgame thing, not just a season finale early of the show’s run. It felt like wasted potential to me, but this was also back when I thought of alicorns as like demi-gods of the FiM universe.

Our fandom melts down about every season or so.  
Season 3, Alicorn Twi.  
Season 4, Twilight’s castle.

I don’t think anyone really complaining, and not being one of the sociopaths sending death threats, really cares about full Alicorn Twilight.
 
Nothings changed on that front cept’ how she looks and a confirmation of immortality.
 
It’s everything else going on thats got so many riled up.

In the end, the future refused to change.
