So what happened you see is that Epona died and Link battled death himself to find his best friend. He eventually found his way into Equestria where Epona had been reborn as an earth pony. He played her song and she remembered all their adventures together. Then they set out saving a new kingdom with a different princess and the roles reversed, Link now playing the part of sidekick.
